Here in Anchorage, Eagle River, Wasilla and the Mat-Su Valley, we are no strangers to cold Alaskan winters. Our homes are safe havens from the winter cold, and where we spend time with our loved ones and enjoy the cozy comforts of life.
During the winter it can sometimes feel difficult to keep costs down when we are watching energy prices surge across the U.S. There are many households that are behind in their utility bills. We know that we can’t control prices, but we can improve how our home maintains heat and how we use it. Below are some ways you can lower your Alaskan heating bill this winter.
1. Check with your provider about savings
The first step you can take is to check with your provider and see if they offer any sort of savings. Some providers will offer budget billing and can estimate your bill and usages. This can help you to budget for your monthly costs. You may not save money this way, but you can get an idea of costs. If you’re finding that it’s too difficult to maintain you can investigate switching providers. If you’re renting your home, you can look for ways to make smaller changes to improve heat retention and talk to your landlord about other bigger upgrade options.
2. Check your appliances
When was the last time that your appliances were serviced? If you want to lower your heating bill it’s important that a heating professional comes to inspect your furnace each year. It might seem counterproductive to spend money when you’re trying to save, but it could save you from a more costly repair later. If it is an option, you might also consider switching to a solar heating system which can reap long term rewards and tax credits.
3. Check you have adequate airflow
It’s important to make sure that your air can flow easily, and heat can spread throughout your room. Look for any furniture or items that could be blocking or covering radiators or vents. Take time inspect your radiators and vents and make sure they are free of debris and can work properly.
4. Utilize your blinds
Your blinds or curtains are a great way to subtly insulate your home and reduce costs. Open your blinds to allow sunlight and warmth in during the day and close them at night to prevent colder evening air from entering.
5. Clean your heating system
Take time to have someone look at your duct work and check for leaks, a professional can save you thousands of dollars. Clean out your heating system, ductwork, and filters. Filters need to be changed periodically for the system to function properly. Your individual HVAC system will have its own needs, but it’s important to inspect and replace filters to keep it running efficiently.
