FINALLY! You’ve purchased the Alaskan home of your dreams. You’ve been through the process, and you’ve crossed the finish line. The dotted lines are signed and initialed and the keys are yours. Now what? Now is the fun part….or is it? Time to decorate! If the thought of figuring out how to design, style and decorate your new home puts a lump in your throat, we have a few tips to help you unleash your creative dragon.

Find a master
One way to help yourself tap into what you’d like to see in your home is to look at what some of the top influencers and interior designers are doing with their spaces. Many designers participate in showcases where the proceeds go to charity. During these events they decorate a room in a style that best represents the trends they are currently embracing. These events can be seen either in person or virtually and can help light that spark. You can also look at popular design magazines and sites for inspiration.

Start with an ‘anchor’
Wait what? Like on a boat?? No, not really, but this “anchor” design piece is an object such as a centerpiece bowl, lamp, frame or even small furniture that you really love. If you have one item that you truly enjoy you can use that as a starting point and reference it when you’re styling the room around it. This “anchor” will help you get your design idea planted and help you to start exploring your creative vision.

Collect your virtual loves
Start a Pinterest board. Take the time to explore images on Pinterest that inspire you and create a board dedicated to style. When you find images that speak to you save them and use them as a memory aid to visualize what you’re drawn to.

Experiment with flower arranging
Flowers are soul searchers. These beautiful blooms in various shapes, textures and hues can help you tap into what lights up your soul the most. Take time to play around with arranging and decorating flowers. You may find that you’re drawn to symmetrical arrangements, or more minimalist styles. If so, modern décor may be in your future.

Create a mood/vision board in your space
Pinterest can provide you with a virtual canvas, but a physical board in your space can bring the styles you love to life. Take time to collect things and add them to your cork board. You can take pages out of magazines that speak to you, or postcards, or ribbons that grab you with their brilliant colors. As all the items come together, you’ll start to see your personal style shine forth.

Start small
Sometimes we just need a sampler platter to figure out which items we like best. Take a small corner of your home and decorate it to your fancy. Bring in a few objects such as decorative bowls, vases, photos or artwork. Decorate that space in a way that inspires you and leave it there for a week. After a week, see if you still are in love with it. If you are, great you have a starting point, and if not, you can try something new.
