Top 2021 Renovation Trends Among Homeowners

The pandemic created a new normal for all of us. Many homeowners spent more time at home than ever before. Spending more time at home made it even more obvious that we needed to make some changes to our spaces. Homeowners needed to find new spaces at home to work, to entertain, to relax, and to have a moment alone. But what were the renovation trends that help accomplish this?

2021 was a seller’s market and many homeowners found that it was a great time to sell their home. The only drawback that they ran into was that it was often hard to find another home to purchase, so some chose to make their current spaces more livable or fix up the homes they ended up buying. What projects topped the lists among 2021 renovation trends?

Personalized main bedrooms

A place to rest and recharge is something that is important to all of us. During the pandemic it became even more vital to have clearly defined spaces for each activity. Main bedrooms often saw dramatic color changes, 3D wall applications, and other increased forms of personalization.

Improved modern kitchens that allowed for multitasking

The kitchen is often thought to be the heart of the home. The kitchen is the first and most renovated room. The downside to the pandemic was that it caused a shortage of materials and labor that made projects more difficult to accomplish. The result of this was that homeowners found a way to better utilize the space. Kitchens became not only the space where food was prepared but also the command center for work, schooling, entertainment and so on.

Open floor plans are out

Open floor plans have often been highly desired amount home buyers, but recently there’s been a trend back to more defined spaces. People are moving back toward more formal entertainment with a leaning toward formal dining and living rooms once again. There’s also an increased desire to improve the family room. Artful entertainment is replacing massive entertainment systems. This allows for more built-ins and maximizing the usage of space.

Bathrooms became sanctuaries

If you have ever found yourself hiding in the bathroom to just have a quiet moment away from people, or pets, you can understand why the pandemic led to an increase in bathroom renovations. The bathroom provides a private space that allows for relaxation. Remodeling your bathroom allowed homeowners to fill that need while unable to travel. Generally, the bathroom renovation would include replacing cabinetry, vanities, countertops, and toilets. The renovations allowed them to maximize their spaces.

Guest bedrooms got an upgrade

Guest bedrooms started to feel more like a favorite destination. There was an increase in coffee bars, mini fridges, specialty lighting, private zoom/work desks added to the guest rooms. The guest room décor often favored the geographic location of the home. These rooms were made even more attractive than the simple bed and side table presentation of years past.

Improved landscaping and outdoor living

Renovations weren’t limited to indoor spaces. The pandemic found us maximizing all our spaces including our landscapes. Outdoor garden beds and borders as well as lawns topped the outdoor renovation lists. These provided ways to define spaces and allow flexibility to change up spaces on a seasonal basis. Patios, terraces and decks saw more love in 2021 than years priors. As remote working and outdoor dining increased in popularity, we found a need to make updates to increase our enjoyment as we utilized these spaces.
