Your Fall “Honey Do” list to Get your Alaskan Home Ready for Winter

Fall is here, we don’t even know how it happened, but summer ran out the door and fall quickly took its seat. It seems like the seasons are continuously playing musical chairs and before we know it winter will be here. Is your home ready for our beautiful Alaskan winter? As the leaves begin falling off the trees it is time to start compiling your ‘honey do’ list to get your Alaskan home ready for winter and tackling tasks around your Anchorage, Eagle River, Wasilla and the Mat-Su Valley property.

Prepare a mudroom

It seems that the wetter weather always sneaks up on us. After a summer full of dry feet and clean puppy paws, it can make for a muddy and wet surprise after the first rainfall. If you don’t have a specialized ‘mudroom’ you can create one in your entryway. Take the time to organize and stock your entryway with your winter essentials to keep your home and tidy.

  • Floor mats for dirty and wet shoes
  • Coat hooks for your extra bulky winter clothing
  • Umbrella stand so that you always know where it is
  • Create space for your winter clothing and footwear

Turn off the outdoor water

Even though that garden hose was welcoming on hot summer days, it’s time to pack it away. As the weather starts to cool down now is the time to turn off that outdoor water supply and roll up the hose. You can hold off turning off the water until the temps drop low enough but keep an eye on that thermometer so you can safely disable your outdoor plumbing before the first freeze.

Clean out the gutters

Yes, the leaves are just starting to fall and there will be more, which makes it the perfect time to create space in your gutter. Take a moment to clean out your gutters and check for any damaged roof shingles while you’re up there.

Check your furnace

As the first chills start to hit the air you’re probably tempted to reach for that thermostat. Take a moment to check the health and safety of your furnace. For extra peace of mind, you can schedule an appointment and have an HVAC expert inspect your furnace to make sure it’s in good working order.

Put away outdoor furniture

Your outdoor living room has had a lot of use this past year, especially this summer as we all clamored to gather in small groups and spend time outdoors. As winter approaches it’s time to clean up your outdoor chairs, tables, and get them stored away or covered up. Your summer garden décor can be packed away and ready for the next season.

Preparing for a new season can bring mixed emotions. Sometimes we are already mourning the end of summer before it’s over or craving spring in early winter, but no matter how we may feel it’s a good idea to take a practical approach to our homes and property. Making a list of tasks to check off as you move into the next season will help you get your Alaskan home ready for winter keep your property looking beautiful and organized.
