How to make your home your happy place

Sometimes it feels like our homes are working overtime to accommodate the changing demands that quarantine has demanded of us – from gym to classroom to playroom to office to sanctuary. That’s a big load to carry and might leave your space feeling stale and unstimulating. We know how you feel, which is why we rounded up the following ways to refresh your space, improve your mood, and make your home your happy place.

Declutter Your Space

It’s scientifically proven that a tidy, clutter-free space lowers stress levels. If your home feels claustrophobic and cramped due to more people sharing the space and creating more chaos, it can be helpful for mental health to declutter your space and create spatial harmony. Start small and just do one room at a time. As you organize, you’re certain to feel a sense of accomplishment, and the added benefit of a relaxed state of mind.

Define Boundaries

It can help your mood and keep you on track if you make sure to compartmentalize your living space. If you’re using a portion of your house as an office, it would be helpful to find some way to make that space feel separate, so that when you step out of it, you’re no longer in ‘work mode.’ If you don’t have the physical walls of a separate room, you can use curtains, furniture or dividers to create walls and separate the space. Another tip is to designate a section of your home to be a workout zone using a yoga mat or other workout tools to outline your fitness space. One important thing to not neglect is to create a sanctuary in your space for rest and relaxation that can’t be mixed up with work or fitness.

Add Color and Light

Various colors are linked to improved mood and well-being. There are many easy ways to incorporate a pop of color into your space. One way is by adding throw pillows, area rugs, artwork, curtains or other accessories to accent your existing color scheme or bring in more variety. If you live in a space that you are able to paint, you can utilize this cheap and easy way to incorporate color. While color is already a great improvement, it can be further improved by increasing natural light. Find ways to reorganize your space to take full advantage of existing natural light. Reflective surfaces such as mirrors can be utilized to brighten up even the darkest areas.

Freshen the Air

Your mood can be easily influenced by scents. Ask anyone that walks by a freshly blooming rose garden! Adding candles, essential oil diffusers, fresh flowers, perfumed fragrances and plain ol’ fresh open air are all great ways to bring in some mood-enhancing aromas and add to your happy place. Another thing that you shouldn’t be neglecting is the quality of your air. Incorporating houseplants is an amazing way to purify the air and add greenery to your space.

Giving your space a little bit of TLC will help your mood and improve your overall well-being, making your house the happiest of homes.
