How to create a calm, peaceful home

Bored kids, even bored adults, can create a lot of chaos and stress in the home, especially during the long winter months here in Alaska. If you need a little calm in your life, or maybe you’re fighting seasonal affective disorder and need to clear your head, we’ve rounded up the following ways to create some space that’s soothing all year round.

Hide the electronics: Nobody wants to stare a tangle of charging cords and devices. Create a charging station in an out-of-the-way space and invest in a few inexpensive cord organizing solutions to keep the area neat and tidy. Some people also say that there’s benefit to distancing yourself from all the beeps, chimes and rings that have become a constant in our society today and enjoying a bit of blessed quiet.

Install soft lighting: Harsh overhead lighting or too-bright bulbs can make you feel like you’re being interrogated. Change out bulbs for softer lighting or install dimmers if you need the flexibility.

Buy some fresh flowers: For a quick pick-me-up and warm, happy feelings, there’s nothing quite like treating yourself (or a loved one) to fresh flowers.

Add some greenery: Studies have shown that plants have the power to provide cleaner air, visually freshen up a space, and ease anxiety. If you have trouble sleeping, try potted jasmine or lavender in your bedroom. Easy to care for houseplants with little water or sun requirements are the best here in Alaska, so be sure to check your local gardening store to see what they keep in stock and recommend.

Clear the clutter: There’s a reason Marie Kondo is popular, people are drawn to clean, organized spaces because they make them feel better. Picture a messy, disorganized room (like a teenager’s or a college dorm room). Now picture a clean, organized sitting room. I bet you started breathing a little bit easier with just that little exercise. Imagine how much better an uncluttered room will make you feel.

Add soothing colors: Softer colors evoke calming feelings. Go for blues, greens and neutral warm shades like cream or sand on the walls, for your furniture or even with pillows and snuggly blankets.
