What Buyers Remorse? Survey says that homeowners are happy people

Homes make people happy – at least that’s what the latest Homebuyer Insights Report says after talking to thousands of consumers throughout the United States. Buyers remorse? No way! In fact, most Americans have no regrets about buying a home.

While the study found that most Americans prefer a mortgage payment to rent and felt that owning a home was a better, more stable and more desirable financial decision than renting, they also felt that the emotional benefits were just as important.

Most homeowners (93%) credited their happiness to an improved lifestyle and the variety of hobbies that come with owning. In fact, 88% said it was the best decision they ever made. And they went on and on about the happiness factor of owning a home, such as:

  • More than 50% of homeowners defined a home as a place to make memories
  • 79% said that owning a home has changed them for the better
  • Two-thirds of respondents say their relationships with family and loved ones changed for the better since purchasing a home

Owning a home also was credited for people developing new hobbies and expanding their life experiences, with three out of four of those crediting new hobbies such as landscaping and gardening, cooking/baking/grilling, and interior design or remodeling resulting from buying a home.

Survey responders also credited homeownership as improving relationships in the following ways:

  • Giving families a sense of pride: 47%
  • More opportunities for entertaining: 49%
  • Ability to strengthen family ties by bringing everyone under one roof: 24%
