Home Staging Tricks to Freshen up your Decor

Home Staging Tips and Home Decor Tricks

Here’s a fun idea to keep life interesting during winter’s long months ahead – transform your home so it feels like new! When it comes to taking home interiors from blah to brilliant, home stagers have a lot of tricks up their sleeve. If your home décor is feeling a bit tired, we thought it would be fun to share a few easy home staging tips inspired by local home stagers for freshening up your home and giving you something fun to look forward to this winter.

FLOORS

You may not think about floors much but swap out your old area rugs for new ones, or shine up your hardwood floor, and you’ll notice the difference. For wood floors you can buff out nicks and scratches then give them a thorough polishing for some serious shine.

If you have carpet, give it a good cleaning as well. Just because you have carpet doesn’t mean you can’t use area rugs. Add some new rugs in high traffic areas on both wood or carpeting to freshen up the room’s décor. For rugs you already have, have them cleaned, then purchase a new thick pad to go underneath the rug to make it look and feel more luxurious.

BEDROOM

Recreate the feel of a luxury spa retreat in your bedroom by using these home staging tips:

  • Tuck your comforter into the end of your mattress
  • Replace old pillows and treat yourself to new sheets
  • Now add more pillows in fun colors and patterns for a luxurious feel
  • Drape a soft throw across the foot of the bed
  • Hang one large piece of art above the headboard, or a grouping of art

BATHROOM

You can also have a spa-like bathroom with just a few tweaks. If it’s in your budget, get rid of old worn-out towels and invest in all-white towels, bath mats, and shower curtains. They are actually much easier to clean than you think, and they give the room a luxury spa feel without the big price tag. Store odds and ends under your counters and reposition what’s left like they do in the spas. For example, roll and stack bath towels on the corner of the tub. Do the same with hand towels near the sink. Add fresh flowers, an arrangement of candles, or a pretty dish that holds a colorful collection of bath bombs for your next soak.

FRONT DOOR

Make coming home fun again by sprucing up your front door. Take a cue from home stagers and try the following for an impressive first impression.

  • Give your front door a fresh coat of paint
  • Hang shiny new house numbers in a fun style
  • Put out a new welcome mat
  • Add flowers or potted topiaries in Spring and Summer
  • For Fall or Winter add large pots with an interesting arrangement of sticks, twigs, and dried flowers. Make it shine even more by adding twinkle lights to the arrangements.

INSIDE

When was the last time you walked into an open house and saw any clutter? Home stagers know that clean and simple is the way to go. Avoid overwhelm by tackling a different room each day, or maybe just on the weekends, for decluttering. Recycle, trash, donate or store anything you don’t like or use anymore for a more spacious look.

Freshen up your color palette. Home stagers like to use neutral palettes to make rooms seem larger and more inviting. Cream, white or light grey are universally flattering as background colors. If you want some flair, feel free to add it with colorful furniture, pillows, etc.

Whether you’re selling your home, or just want to freshen up the home you love and live in right now, I hope you’ve found some fun ideas you’re excited to start working on. The next time you tour an open house or look at a beautiful new home on the market here in Anchorage, Eagle River, or Wasilla, Alaska, look around to see if you spot any ideas you can use in your own home. And if you’re ready to sell, or have questions about how home staging can help, please give us a call.
